Investment in culture is broadly recognised as a key element in urban and regional development strategies. The presence and quality of cultural activities is a major factor of attractiveness of a city and a measure of quality of living.
This €1 million project, funded under the Creative Europe programme (DG EAC), will run until summer 2017. It aims to examine existing practices of culture as a key element in local and regional development strategies. It will also enable the exchange and transfer of knowledge, to better understand successful examples of cultural investment, and to go into the details of policy planning and implementation.
Three main dimensions will be explored throughout this project:
culture and the creative industries for local economic development and urban regeneration
cultural heritage as a driver for economic growth and social inclusion
culture for social inclusion, social innovation and intercultural dialogue
Project activities include:
a catalogue of 70 selected case studies
15 thematic study visits
expert coaching for 10 cities/regions
Beyond a ‘simple’ exchange of experiences, the project will ensure a real impact and a meaningful transfer of local practices.
Call for practices: we want to hear from your city
We are now preparing the catalogue of practices and want to know about successful local practices where cultural investments contributed substantially to the local development of your city. Please fill in the call (see link below) before 6 February 2015. Selected practices will be gathered in a catalogue that will be widely circulated and consulted, including within the EU institutions. Practices will be showcased on a specific website and will give visibility to your city.
A unique opportunity for cities
Leading this project will be a unique opportunity for cities. It is foreseen that between 60 and 95 cities and regions of all sizes will directly benefit from the project.
Activities will feed in the following focus areas of the EUROCITIES strategic framework:
Cities as drivers of quality jobs and sustainable growth
Inclusive, diverse and creative cities
Urban innovation and governance in cities
