EUROCITIES president speaks at COP 21

Johanna Rolland, mayor of Nantes and EUROCITIES president, spoke at several events during COP 21 in Paris, and reiterated the essential role of cities in a global climate deal. To continue the momentum from the Paris summit, she announced that Nantes will host a summit in September next year for non-state actors. She also praised the Covenant of Mayors initiative on climate mitigation and adaptation, and opened our session on smart city solutions.

Cities discuss innovation and social clauses in public procurement

The first in a series of events to help EUROCITIES member cities make the most of public procurement opportunities took place in Brussels on 12-13 November. The event focused on innovation, pre-commercial procurement and social clauses in public procurement. We presented information about the 2014 EU procurement directives and examples from some of our member cities.

EUROCITIES on COP 21 – climate action for jobs & social inclusion

EUROCITIES hosted a session during COP 21 in Paris on 5 December, focusing on the social and economic opportunities of climate action. Politicians from Bonn, Gothenburg, Greater Manchester, Milan, Nantes, Seville and Stockholm discussed ways to create new jobs and improve social inclusion while making our cities greener. They looked at how climate action can create jobs for both low and highly skilled workers, and how to use the low carbon economy as an opportunity to address poverty and social exclusion.

EUROCITIES on COP 21: smart city solutions for energy efficiency & climate change

Politicians from Nantes, Bristol, Malmo and Warsaw discussed ways in which they reduce emissions using ICT during our session on the 'Green Digital Charter - smart city solutions for energy efficiency and climate change' during our session at COP 21 in Paris on 8 December. Panellists considered what being a smarter city means to them, and how this can contribute to their greenhouse gas emissions targets. They explored how initiatives such as the EUROCITIES Green Digital Charter, can support their efforts.

Open call to young professionals - views on the urban future

To mark the 30th anniversary of EUROCITIES, we are launching an open call to collect material to be published in an edited volume of selected views from young professionals. We are asking young professionals aged between 25 and 35 to share their visions for the urban future.

COP 21: EUROCITIES signs the Paris Pledge for Action

By signing up to the Paris Pledge for Action, cities, regions, businesses, investors and other non-state actors, endorse the Paris Agreement and pledge action to implement the terms of the agreement. The pledge has already been signed by over 400 businesses, 130 investors, and 150 cities and regions, representing 150 million people and $11 million (€10 million).

SEISMIC conference on new concepts of public space

The SEISMIC project hosted a conference on 'new concepts of public space' on 24-25 November, where participants discussed issues such as whether Europe needs common standards for public space and whether public ownership is the best guarantee of public access. The conference included four visits to various sites around Brussels, including the newly-pedestrianised Boulevard Anspach.
