The rights of the child are on top of the priorities of the new European
Commission. When taking office in 2019, President Ursula von der Leyen decided
that the rights of the child required special attention by having a dedicated
EU comprehensive Strategy on the rights of the child.
The Forum
With this in mind, the European Commission is organising a European Forum on the rights of the child, which will take place online on 29-30 September and 1 October 2020 (mornings only).
The event is expected to gather online over 250 participants from all EU member states as well as Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and the Western Balkans, representing national and local authorities, civil society, international organisations, children’s ombudspersons, academia, practitioners and EU institutions.
Moving towards an EU Strategy on the rights of the child
This year’s Forum will be part of a wide consultation process that will lead to the adoption of the Strategy in the first months of 2021. A special focus will be given during the Forum to four topics:
- combating violence against children,
- inclusive societies,
- inclusive education
- child friendly justice.
The challenges resulting from and the impact of coronavirus measures on children will also be discussed.
The participants will discuss in policy workshops and panel debates their ideas and proposals for the upcoming EU Strategy on the rights of the child.
